In the last several years, the economic, political, and security climate has changed in the US, dramatically. Fueled by the worldwide pandemic, threats of all types have increased in intensity and frequency. Within California and across the US, we are seeing significant rises in violent crime exacerbated by civil unrest and “Targeted Violence” events (“Targeted Violence” refers to any incident where an individual or group selects a specific target of attack, regardless of motive). Workplace Violence, Acts of Terrorism, Mass Shootings, and Active Shooter incidents all fall within the definition of “Targeted Violence.” In 2021, there were more than 300 mass shootings in the US, representing an increase which exceeded the already-high numbers from 2020. California had the highest number of deadly Mass Shootings in the US last year. The vast majority of this new “wave” of Targeted Violence has been focused on various entities of the Private Sector, Educational Institutions, Houses of Worship, and Healthcare Facilities. Between 2020 and 2021, we saw large increases in the number of threats, harassing behaviors, and “Targeted Violence” against all sectors of our society. There has also been a massive increase in Cyber Attacks of all types. Malware, Ransomware, Business Email Compromise, Phishing, just to name a few. These crippling attacks are damaging to small organizations, large infrastructure-related corporations, and everything in between.
